SSRN-'I've Got Nothing to Hide' and Other Misunderstandings of Privacy

This post discusses the often discussed but seldom though out argument that if you have nothing to hide you shouldn't fear government's watching your activities. Nothing could be further from the truth. The fact that your actions violate no laws nor are considered out of the public norm doesn't mean that you should not protect the privacy of your actions. For it is the threat of government control that is the real danger to government's snooping into our lives. Only a government that knows our actions can try to contain or control those actions. And if you think that the government won't use such knowledge to watch, control, and manage your life you would be mistaken if history is any example.
